Shockwave Therapy – Frequently Asked Questions

Line

Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses acoustic pressure waves to stimulate healing in damaged or painful soft tissues. Originally used in kidney stone treatment, it’s now a well-established therapy for muscle, tendon, and joint conditions — especially those that haven’t responded to traditional physiotherapy or manual therapy.

Shockwave therapy works by sending targeted sound waves into the affected area. These waves cause a mild mechanical disturbance in the tissues, which stimulates the body’s natural healing processes.

The treatment:

  • Increases blood flow and oxygen supply to the area
  • Stimulates the growth of new blood vessels (neovascularisation)
  • Activates tendon and muscle repair cells (fibroblasts and tenocytes)
  • Reduces pain by desensitising nerve endings
  • Breaks down calcified or scarred tissue

On a cellular level, shockwave therapy:

  • Triggers a healing response by briefly increasing inflammation (which is a good thing in chronic injuries)
  • Encourages the breakdown of damaged tissue and the regeneration of new, healthy cells
  • Decreases levels of pain-related chemicals
  • Stimulates collagen production — essential for tendon healing

You might feel some discomfort during the treatment — usually described as a deep tapping or thumping sensation on the skin. It can feel intense over sore areas, but it’s very manageable.

We always work within your pain tolerance, and the energy levels can be adjusted with our Storz Medical device (many other machines cannot be adjusted as well to your tolerance making ours more comfortable).

Many people say it feels similar to a deep tissue massage, and pain relief is often felt immediately afterwards due to the therapy’s natural numbing effect.

Yes — when performed by a qualified therapist, shockwave therapy is extremely safe.

  • It’s non-surgical, drug-free, and clinically backed
  • Approved by NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) for conditions like plantar fasciitis and tendinopathies
  • Widely used in the NHS and elite sports medicine

Mild side effects can include temporary redness, tenderness, or slight bruising.

This depends on the condition being treated and how long you’ve had it. Typically, we recommend:

  • 3 to 6 sessions, spaced one week apart
  • Each session lasts 45 minutes including soft tissue therapy if required
  • Healing continues for weeks after your final session

We’ll always discuss your specific treatment plan after your first assessment.

Shockwave therapy is effective for a wide range of chronic and stubborn issues, including:

  • Plantar Fasciitis & Heel Pain
  • Achilles Tendinopathy
  • Patellar Tendonitis (Runner’s Knee)
  • Gluteal & Hamstring Tendinopathy
  • Tennis & Golfer’s Elbow
  • Shoulder Calcific Tendinopathy
  • Adductor (Groin) Strains
  • Myofascial Trigger Points & Chronic Tightness

If your condition hasn’t responded to rest, exercise, or manual therapy — shockwave might be the next step.
